This week, Ruth Crowell (CEO, LBMA) interviewed Diana Culillas, Secretary General, of the Swiss Better Gold Association (SBGA), to find out more about the initiative they are undertaking and what it aims to achieve.
The SBGA supports the creation of gold value chains from Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) to market, by bringing together a network of industry, finance and other service providers.
In the interview, Diana explains how valuable the collaboration between the public and private sector has been in terms of including ASM-sourced material into the supply chains of private businesses.
They discuss some of the challenges (legal, environmental and social) facing ASM communities in climbing on the ‘escalator‘ to build supply chains with downstream partners, and explore just how communication and commitment to the journey are crucial to the process.
