LBMA is pleased to announce two new fascinating and topical presentations for the Assaying & Refining Conference 2025, each delivered by an expert speaker.
A Collaborative Framework to Ensure Availability of Certified Reference Materials for Precious Metal Refineries
ISO 17025:2017 requires that analytical results be metrologically traceable to the SI system, often achieved through the use of Certified Reference Materials (CRMs). These materials are essential for method validation, instrument calibration, and ensuring accurate and reliable analytical results. However, while CRMs are commonly available for bullion and high-purity PGM sponges, their availability for refinery feed grades and process intermediates is limited due to factors such as refining process non-conformity, the high value of precious metals, and proprietary technologies.

In this presentation, Hannelie de Beer (Managing Director, Qotho Minerals) will propose a potential collaborative framework to address these challenges and enhance the availability of CRMs for refinery feed grades and process intermediates, including collaborative material preparation, transparency and reporting, material certification and return, and a pre-agreed transactional mechanism.
Recycled Gold - ISO/TC 174 Work
Over the past few years, the definition of recycled gold has received a lot of scrutiny from all stakeholders. It has also been seen as a way for refiners to promote and advertise their own practices, leading to a very fragmented market where LBMA, Responsible Jewellery Council, and many refiners and end-users are using different, incompatible definitions.

ISO/TC 174 “Jewellery and Precious Metals” has been working on a unified definition for recycled gold to be released later this year. In his presentation, Jonathan J. Jodry (Group Business Development Director, Metalor Technologies SA) will introduce the approach proposed for this new ISO standard 21261-3, as well as the impact for the precious metal market, LBMA, and the refiners. |
Don't Miss Our Keynote Speakers and Sampling Workshop

l-r: Russ Calow, Kim H. Esbensen
We are excited to see Hannelie de Beer and Jonathan Jodry join our distinguished lineup of speakers, including our keynote speakers Russ Calow (President, Calow Laboratory Consulting Ltd) and Kim H. Esbensen (Senior Consultant & Professor, KHE Consulting).
In addition to delivering a keynote address, Kim Esbensen will be leading a three-hour workshop on the Theory of Sampling, which will include:
- Principles of the Theory of Sampling;
- What happens in the critical 'before analysis' domain;
- Which errors matter and what to do; and
- Resolution - the universal standard DS3077:2024 (3. ed.).
Don't miss out on this authoritative workshop, taking place following the close of Conference speaker sessions on Wednesday, 19 March from 09:00 to 12:30 GMT.
